Writing in the present tense is releasing the strangle-hold of the past tense
Based on a poll of my potential readers, I decided to change the tense of my upcoming book from past to present. It took a little more than two weeks to edit the first eight chapters. In the process, I found my voice. As a technical writer for more that 25 years, I never developed…
The present tense wins!
Thank you everyone for your replies. Ninety percent of you prefer the present tense. I am now editing what I have written to date to reflect your choice. The first draft is about 80% complete, only three or four chapters left to write. Then, edit, edit, edit.
Present or Past tense
First pass, I wrote the book in the past tense and now I am debating if the present tense is more appropriate. Does the reader want me to relate the a story of my walking the Camino (past tense) or to be swept along in the midst of the action (present tense). If the story…
Writing to reconnect with the universe
I returned from hiking the Camino de Santiago a different person from when I left. I was connected to the universe in a way I never had experienced, in tune with nature, with people, with myself. Life was full of goodness and I radiated with joy. Four busy months later, that link is not as…
How does one express in words an indescribable beauty?
Yesterday at the Appalachian Trail Club of Florida, I gave an hour-long slide presentation titled, The Camino de Santiago, the Way of the Stars. My goal was to inform the audience about the Camino de Santiago, to give a glimpse of the indescribable beauty of the Camino, and to encourage members of the hiking club…
Writing Women of the Way is extending my Camino experience
I am starting the new year without a resolution; I don’t believe in them since they have not been helpful to me in the past. I am carrying over goals from last year, goals that resulted from my walking 500 miles in Spain on the path known as the Camino de Santiago. Some if these…

Learning the nuances of blogging and content management
Today I listened to a webinar on content strategy. I learned that my Web site is really a blog, but with managed content. As I tried to implement some of the ideas mentioned, I ran into problems. I spent a lot of time and research in trying to figure out how to get the RSS…
Writing the book Women of the Way is so much fun
I am starting my fourth transcript in two days, really on a roll. I started by doing the transcripts of conversations I had with the women I met along the Camino. I did seven or eight of these, sent them out for interviewee review and approval, and then I started filling in the story about…
Good news and lessons learned
Prior to going on the Camino, I had fantasized about writing a book about The Way. I had not considered what it would entail, how it would differentiate itself from myriads of books about the Camino, or how I would personalize it. Nothing. Writing a book was just a random thought. While walking along the…
