For Life with Love: The Sonnet Collection Book 1 by Kevin M. Jackson is the first time I review a poetry book. Sonnets, I found, are poems written in iambic pentameter (ten group of words that stress the second syllable) , that are fourteen lines long, have a rhyming pattern, and a turn or volta. The Shakespearean sonnet has a distinctive rhyming scheme (ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG) with the volta starting in the ninth line.

Mr. Jackson started writing sonnets at age sixteen. This book includes sonnets from that age as well as the more recent, and reflect traditional,  Shakespearean, and personal styles.

The forty sonnets have the theme For Life with Love, also the title of the collection. Since they were written over a period of years, the appeal to a wide range of ages: from teenage crushes, to love unrequited love, to finding the love of one’s life.

As the writer matures, so does his poetic ability. I preferred the theme and style of the later-written sonnets. My favorite is Sonnet 115, which ends:

With that, here’s this: I’d walk a million miles
To see you light up life with gentle smiles.
