The cover of Dark Eye of the Jaguar by Robert Mitchell caught my attention and then the first couple of paragraphs pulled me into the story. Ben finds an old writing desk in the Dirt Market in Beijing. Upon returning home, he finds secret compartments within the desked. In them, there are an unfinished letter detailing a buried treasurer, a cross, pieces of jade and gold–all ancient and potentially valuable.

As Ben and his wife Susie try to determine the value, more characters become involved in the search for these relics and the buried chest. Whom can they trust?

I enjoyed the story until the pace slowed down by dialog between Susie and Ben. Once the decisions were made to return to China and to recover the chest, the action resumed and the story moved along.

I recommend this story for people who enjoy light thrillers. The suspense is not too scary and the story is enjoyable.
