Timeglass by Phoenix Ward is a thought-provoking dystopian novel. The protagonist, Kaira, finds a stone that allows her to stop time. At first, she and her best friend Alethea use the stone to play tricks. When Kaira tries to use the stone to steal chocolate, she is caught and taken to the Prophet, the supreme ruler of Hope. He sends her to the dungeon.

With the help of the timeglass, Kaira escapes. She then decides to find out more about the Prophet who rules in luxury while the peasants live in squander. As she spies on him, she realizes that he too has a timeglass and she becomes an unwanted passenger on his trip back in time just prior to the end of the world.

As she follows the Prophet she discovers his secrets. Returning to her present time, she and Alethea plot to expose the tyrant. Is she successful or is he too powerful?

I liked Kaira’s strong and human character. She doesn’t know all the answers but is willing to try. Will her strong sense of justice be her salvation–or her downfall? I look forward to the next book in The Timeglass Series.
