The premise to Bump Time by Doug J. Cooper is unusual: people from the future but in parallel worlds affect the present (by bumping time) to improve the future. All of this is controlled by an AI whose objective is to increase her power and understanding. To do so, she creates a portal through which future Diesel Langerfords (distinguished by their current age in their parallel world) travel to “assist” the present 26-year-old Diesel.
With time the AI realizes that to gain dominance she must kill Diesel’s wife, the original programmer that led to her existence. As the older Diesels begin dying long with Lilah, the wife, the younger Diesels begin to plot a way to bump time and prevent the deaths.
I found the repetitious rituals around the time-travel portal a bit boring. In my opinion, streamlining the story would have increased the suspense and interest.
If you enjoy time travel mysteries, then you might enjoy Bump Time.
