Don’t let the cover dissuade you from reading A Guardian Angel by Phoenix Ward. I loved Andy Winter’s character. He is an assassin with a conscience. He decides not to kill his latest assignment, Haley Flynn and disappears into the distance
The novel is constructed in four parts. As a started to read the second section, Forty-Ton Angel, I surmised that the book was a series of short stories. This section’s main character, Tim Simacean, is not developed as Andy’s. He is a farmer who lost his cattle when a large metal Angel fell on the barn. This curiosity brings out the religious, the profiteers, the government, and others. In the end, there is a shootout and the metal angel is destroyed.
The next section introduces the Knights of the Proletariat and other organizations that are fighting for control. As Haley Flynn continues to work for peace, I realize that this is one story and not a collection of short stories. The action in this second seemed more realistic and the pace is quick.
In the last section, Harbinger, the world seems about to collapse. More metal objects are falling from the skies, people are infighting, aliens take Haley Flynn, and Andy Winter tries to rescue her. There is a trial, a judgment, and a new beginning.
In the end, I enjoyed the story. It was interesting and some of the characters seemed very real. With a bit more organization and better transitions, A guardian Angel could have been a great story.
