Diana Christmas by F. R. Jameson is described as a thriller noir. Unfamiliar with the genre, I looked up noir fiction and learned that in this category the protagonist is not a detective, but a victim, a suspect, or a perpetrator and that the protagonist is self-destructive and victimized by a corrupt system. In this story, Diana Christmas is a forgotten screen star from the 1950’s who is interviewed by Michael, a film journalist. Enrapt by her beauty and woeful story, Michael becomes entangled in a web of deceit, lies, murder.
The best part of the story is Michael’s narration so beautifully crafted that it felt as if he were telling me the story as we sat having a drink somewhere. I couldn’t put the book down. What more can I say? If you enjoy a suspenseful thriller I highly recommend this book. Perhaps you too will become a fan of this genre.
