In Transfer from Alcatraz by Eddie Owens, private eye “Red” Raeburn is requested to corroborate evidence of murders that happened 50 years ago. In a manuscript, her client claims to have murdered eight people in Alcatraz and wishes her to find the evidence to prove his claims. As she starts to investigate, she is “warned” not to continue with the research and, then, the warnings progressively get more menacing.

Written as a narrative from Red’s point of view, I was surprised to discover that the author is male. He credibly creates a complex female character with a full life. Other unique characters add to the story’s depth.

The story is exciting and fun to read. The showdown was tense and the ending is surprising. I highly enjoyed and recommend Transfer from Alcatraz.
