The Hard Side of the River by Johnny Payne is such a delightful read! Mr Payne fully fleshed out the main characters with unique dialog and phraseology. Such talent.

Set in the 1830s, the novel is about abolition. Cal Fenton and Dana Curbstone tried to help Jacob Pingram to escape into Ohio. Tracker Baskin made a living by returning runaway slaves to their owners. The novel is also about love, forgiveness, and survival.

This book is a pleasure to read and I recommend it not only to those who enjoy reading historical fiction but to anyone interested in a beautifully written story.
