The Defector (Janac’s Games) by Mark Chisnell is a fast-paced attention grabber, related in the first person. I found it compelling, once I got past the first chapter. I lost a few nights sleep because I just could not put the book down. Imagine beings singled out by a villain who forces you to play a game of life and death: you win, you live; you lose, you die. Then the stakes get higher as you unwittingly involve the woman you love. I just loved the exquisite description and emotional urgency in the “game” with the bomb.

I found the introduction and first chapter too descriptive, as if the author were trying too hard. Initially, I did not like Martin, the main character. I was put off by his not taking responsibility for his actions. As the story developed, it became evident that Janac, the villain, used this character flaw to his advantage. I am glad I continued reading and subsequently became engrossed in the story. It was a good read.
