St. James’ Rooster by Tracy Saunders is two stories in one. The primary story is that of Diego Gilmerez and his part in developing the city of Santiago de Compostela into a major pilgrimage destination and international city. The secondary story is the continuation of the tale of two characters from The Camino Chronicles, Laura and Felix.

Laura is working on her doctorate’s about 12th century Compostela. One day, she experiences an eerie regression into the Middle Ages. In the persona of Pedro, Diego’s Gelmirez’ nephew, she chronicles the happenings surrounding the uncle’s life.

Though this is a novel, Tracy Saunder’s research is apparent. Her story-telling skills make it interesting to read about the machinations of those in power at that time, the church’s involvement, and the development of the cathedral and the city of Compostela.

If you are a history buff or just want to know more about the development of Santiago de Compostela, I recommend reading St. James’ Rooster by Tracy Saunders.
