Rules of the Earth is the first detective thriller by Wendy Cartmell in the Crane and Anderson series. Retired Sgt. Major Crane and DCI Anderson work together to find out what happened to a young girl that was found walking about in a thin black garb and with strange markings on her arms, and so traumatized that she cannot speak. When a second child with these strange markings is found dead, the two detectives work doubly hard to solve what has happened. Who are the girls? Where do the come from? How were they abducted? What happened to them?

Rules of the Earth is moderately paced with enough action to keep the story moving. Though the book is entertaining, it is not a page-turner. It is a good read for those who like a sanitized crime fiction. What happened to the girls is unusual and disturbing, but the story does not dwell on the violence and is not gruesome.
