Brothers in Stripes by Wayne Michaels is a story for children ages 5 to 8 years old. It describes the adventures of two lazy tiger cubs, Felix and Max. When a herd of elephants separates the young tigers from the streak, Felix and Max are forced into learning how to hunt and share food, lessons they were never interested in learning from their parents. The moral of the story is easy for youngsters to comprehend; the drawings, especially of the elephant, are eye-catching.

Since I don’t normally review children’s books, I asked a school librarian friend to comment on the appropriateness of the language for the age group. She replied: “I think the language is appropriate–there might be a couple of words SOME kids might not know, but that’s good anyway. They are understandable from context, good words for kids to know, and teachers would make sure kids got those words i.e., “pounce,” ” gobble.”

If you are looking for a book to read to your children, I recommend Brothers in Stripes.
